Welcome! I have a master's degree in elementary education and a valid N.C. teaching certificate. I was a classroom teacher for over 20 years and have been tutoring professionally for the past eleven years. I tutor at client's homes, schools, or a public library. I have over 7,000 hours of experience tutoring children in grades K-5 (*see below) in reading, phonics, spelling, written expression, and math. I've been trained in Orton-Gillingham which is a multi-sensory approach to teaching reading and spelling geared to helping dyslexic students, but highly effective with all learners. This training was an intensive 2-week course followed by tutoring for 9 months under supervision, where I received valuable feedback. I attend workshops each year to get additional training so that my teaching stays current and up-to-date.
I completed a 30 hour course in 2016 by a nationally-renowned instructor in Multi-sensory Math practices. I apply this approach to my math instruction.
I believe that each child has his or her own individual learning style. I do not have cut-and-paste lesson plans, but rather tailor each lesson to the needs of the particular child. Direct instruction, repetition and practice are important elements of my lessons. I also find that playing very specific games can accelerate the learning of students because children are motivated and interested in learning the skill required to play the game. Learning can be fun. I monitor student’s progress and growth and report regularly to parents.
* I am now tutoring only grades K-3.
